Bussaco National Forest

Protected Area

The Bussaco National Forest occupies 105 acres and has one of the best dendrological collections in Europe, with about 250 species of trees and shrubs with remarkable specimens. It is one of the richest national forests in terms of natural, architectural and cultural heritage, and can be divided into three landscape units: Arboretum, Gardens and Vale dos Fetos and Relic Forest. Its monumental ensemble is classified as a National Monument and includes the Palace Hotel do Bussaco, the Santa Cruz Convent, the residential chapels, the devotion chapels and the steps that make up the Via Sacra, the Fence with the Doors, the Military Museum and the commemorative monument of the Battle of Bussaco, the cruises, the fountains (especially the Fonte Fria) and the cisterns, the viewpoints (the Cruz Alta one offers a privileged view over the entire region) or the forest houses. The Bussaco National Forest provides food, shelter and refuge for over one hundred and a half species of vertebrates, some of great conservation value. The biodiversity found in the forest shows the uniqueness and heritage value of this magical space in the municipality of Mealhada.

The Bussaco National Forest is a protected area located in Serra do Buçaco, which is surrounded by a wall, limiting an area of 400 acres, extremely rich in terms of flora. It also has an enormous wealth in architectural terms, such as the Santa Cruz do Buçaco Convent and the Palace Hotel do Buçaco. It is a great place for a walk in nature, with several trails and the possibility of guided tours.
