The strategic location of Mealhada is recognized by many national and international transport companies, which in recent years has resulted in a massive installation of these transport companies in the municipality of Mealhada or nearby. The proximity to the main roads (IP3 and IP1) and railways (Linha do Norte and Linha da Beira Alta) justifies this desire and this commitment by the municipality. The need to rethink and reorganize the transport of goods in a logic, not only of economic profitability, but also of minimization of environmental impacts, forces to find privileged spaces for the location of modal interfaces. It is in this logic that Pampilhosa assumes itself as a central space for the location of a road-rail interface, due to its geostrategic position, the present means of transport and the implemented accessibility. Thus, it is intended that the creation of a Road and Rail Platform in Pampilhosa will become a competitive asset for companies located in the region. The Pampilhosa Road and Rail Platform will function as a platform for the distribution of goods to the entire Central Region and as a vehicle for exporting products to Europe. This platform will make a decisive contribution to achieving greater effectiveness and efficiency, combined with a reduction in costs and distribution times for products produced in the region. The Municipality of Mealhada is strongly committed to the creation of the Pampilhosa Road and Rail Platform because it recognizes the strategic importance of this infrastructure for the development of the socio-economic fabric of the region.
This infrastructure will be located on the land of an old company for the preservation, trade and industry of autoclaved pine wood, “SOPREM”, thus seeking to mitigate the impact of this project and taking advantage of the existing road/rail network, while seeking to revitalize this “abandoned” area. Regarding the interconnection with the railway, the proposed location is located south of the Pampilhosa station and, taking advantage of the existing railway infrastructure, it will be possible to use these facilities as a support area for the loading and unloading of trains. With regard to the volume of transported goods, according to estimates from potential users, the movement of around 150 containers per day is expected.
